Here is a quide to help you decide how many blocks you will need for your project,  when you embroidery a 18 inch unfinished quilt block, and some different ways to put the completed blocks together.

If you just use all embroidered blocks it will take:
  • Twin Quilts Requires   4 packages
  • Queen Quilt Requires  5 packages
  • King Quilt Requires      7 packages

If you use an optional 15 inch border set it will take:
  • Double Quilt Requires   2 packages or 12 blocks
  • Queen Quilt Requires    3 packages or 16 blocks
  • King Quilt Requires        4 packages or 20 blocks
(note: use the extra from the Queen and King to make matching pillows)

You can also put the blocks together with a strip of fabric.  When you trim your finished block it will be 17 1\4 inches, so you will have to have 1 3\4 inch strip on each side to make your block equal 20 inches.  Once you get the 20 inches you can figure out how many you need by the size you want.  You will need to cut your strips at 2 1\4 inches allowing for a 1\4 inch seam allowance.

EXAMPLE:  (using strips of fabric to make the blocks 20 inches.)
When I do a king size quilt I always make it 110 X 110 inches. So I would use 5 rows of 5 blocks and then finish the edge with a 5 inch border all around.   If you do the 120 X 120 inch king you would need 6 rows of 6 block with no border.

When I do a queen size quilt I always make it 100 X 100 inches. So I would use 5 rows of 5 blocks with no border .

Another way to put them together is to use a pieced block.  The easiest way I have found is to use a simple 9 patch, you can make the block 18 inches square and line it up with the untrimmed 18 inch embroidery block and then follow the seam line on the quilt block, by doing this it makes it easy to sew all the blocks together for a finished quilt.
